Kattan is one of the Gramadevatas, and the illegitimate son of a Brahman`s wife. She abandoned Kattan and was brought up by a pariah.

When Kattan grew up he obtained reputation of a necromancer or the one who practices black magic. He died at his own hand. Kattan was then deified as having been received into the service of Mari or Mariamman so that he might convey to her all suicides. Kattan is represented as a dreadful god and many goats and cocks are sacrificed to him.
