Betwa RiverThe dams of Uttar Pradesh stand as a pride to the state and the main objective behind the construction of the dams is power generation to the state. The most important projects of the state are namely the the Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar dam and the Parichha Dam. A number of other dams are also present in the Lalitpur district of Uttar Pradesh.

Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar is constructed over Rihand River, a tributary of Sone. It is the largest man made reservoir in India and is considered as a pride of U.P. The area surrounding the Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar dam has very wealthy reserves of coals. This area is popularly known as Singrauli, which is also a coalfield zone in Uttar Pradesh. The coalmines in Singrauli have the largest concentration of mining equipment in the nation. More than nine mines in this region are producing coal and are supplying to three NTPC and one UPSEB power stations. This place is one of the prime electricity-generating centers in India.

The Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar authorities are also known for their efforts towards restoration of forest and green cover in the region. It is apparent now that the area has much more forest compared to a few years ago. This afforestation process has been a genuine effort on the part of mining companies. Singrauli also boasts of the largest population of productive qualified engineers. Owing to the presence of Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar, the state of Uttar Pradesh is known as the power generating state in India. This dam alone generates around 10000MW from this District and caters to majority of North Indian States. Apart from small settlements and townships, this place has all the natural scenic beauty one can think of in a forest. This place has beautiful landscape, hills for trekking and waterfalls.

Parichha Dam on the other hand stands on Betwa River and is located about 25 kilometers from Jhansi. The dam is sited on the Jhansi-Kanpur National Highway No. 25. Parichha Dam is actually a reservoir or a composed stretch of water. This river flows under the Notghat Bridge, which lies 34 km away and is an ideal spot for water sports.

The dams in Lalitpur district of Uttar Pradesh are quite popular ones in the state for their function of power generation and storing irrigational water. Matatila Dam was built during 1952-1964 on Betwa River in Lalitpur District with a length of about 6.30 km and height of about 33.53 meters. This dam encompasses an area of almost 20,720 square kilometers and has a storage capacity of 1132.68 M.c.m. The Jamni Dam has been constructed during 1962-1973 on Jamni River. The dam is 6.40 km long and 19.18 meters high. The Jamni Dam has an area of 414 square kilometers with storage capacity 92.89 M.c.m.

Rohini Dam, constructed during 1976-1984 on Rohini River has a length of 1.65km and is 15.50 meters high. The area of this dam is around 44 square kilometers and the storage capacity is 12.12 M.c.m. The Shahzad Dam was constructed during 1973-1992 on Shahzad River for a length of about 4.16 km and height 18.00 meters. The area of this dam is almost 514 square kilometers with the storage capacity 130.00 M.c.m. Govind Sagar Dam was constructed during 1947-1953 on Shahzad River and is 3.60 km long. The dam is 18.29 meters high with an area of 368 square kilometers and storage capacity 96.8 M.c.m. Sajnam Dam was built in the period of 1977-1990 on Sajnam River. The dam features 5.15 km length, 18.78 meters height, 290 square kilometers areas and 83.50 M.c.m storage capacities.
