The Ranji Trophy, 1991-92, the leading domestic cricket tournament in India, saw the participation of a number of 27 teams and all the teams were coming from different parts of India. The tournament organisers, BCCI first divided the teams into five different zones, depending on their geographical positions and then made the teams play against each other in their respective zones. According to the norms the top two teams from each zone were promoted to the knock out level of the tournament and those ten teams then competed against each other for the championship title. The teams that participated in the tournament included the likes of Andhra, Assam, Baroda, Bengal, Bihar, Bombay, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Hyderabad, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Punjab, Railways, Rajasthan, Saurashtra, Services, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh and the Vidarbha.

Ranji Trophy, 1991-92, Central Zone League Matches: All the 5 teams that had been playing under the Central Zone in the tournament on a regular basis for the previous several years were present there in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 also. The tournament is famous for being the premium domestic cricket tournament in India and the teams that played under the Central Zone were mainly coming from the Central region of India. The teams included the likes of Vidarbha, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Railways and Madhya Pradesh and they competed against each other very hard for becoming one of the top two teams in the zone. Though all the teams tried their best to secure a berth in the knock out level of the tournament, the teams like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh eventually became successful to do so from the zone. The teams earned total of 66 and 58 points, respectively from the zonal level league matches and entered into the knock out level from the Central zone.

Ranji Trophy, 1991-92, East Zone League Matches: The teams that participated in the East Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92, included Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, Assam and Tripura. The tournament is quite famous in the world for being the premium domestic cricket tournament in India and all the five teams of the East Zone were the regular participants in the tournament. The teams were representing different states from the Eastern region of India and all of them tried their best to become one of the top two teams in the zone. Securing a berth in the knock out level of the tournament was also another principal aim of the teams. However, only the Bengal and Bihar teams could eventually do so. The Bengal and Bihar teams earned total of 69 and 66 points respectively from the zonal level league matches and they competed with the top teams of the other zones in the knock out level for the championship title.

Ranji Trophy, 1991-92, North Zone League Matches: The North Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 that is considered as the most popular domestic cricket tournament in India comprised 6 teams. The teams were mainly belonged to the Northern region of India and all of them had been playing in the tournament on a regular basis for the previous several editions. The teams included the likes of Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Delhi, Haryana, Services and Himachal Pradesh and they played against each other for claiming the top spot in the zone. All the teams also tried their best for getting a chance for competing in the knock out level of the tournament. However, only the teams like Haryana and Delhi eventually became successful to do so from the zone, as they earned the highest points from the zonal level league matches. The Haryana and Delhi teams earned total of 97 and 90 points, respectively at the end of the zonal level league matches and they were also promoted to the knock out level of the tournament.

Ranji Trophy, 1991-92, South Zone League Matches: All the 6 teams that had been playing under the South Zone in the tournament for the past several editions took part in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92, as well. The Ranji Trophy is the leading domestic cricket tournament in India and the participating teams in the South Zone of the tournament were mainly representing different states from the Southern region of India. The teams included the likes of Kerala, Goa, Andhra, Karnataka, Hyderabad and Tamil Nadu and all the teams gave their best efforts to claim the top spot in the zone. The teams also tried hard to get into the knock out level of the tournament, however, only the teams like Hyderabad and Karnataka eventually became successful to do so from the zone. The Hyderabad and Karnataka teams earned 92 and 88 points respectively at the end of the zonal level league matches and they also advanced to the knock out level of the tournament.

Ranji Trophy, 1991-92, West Zone League Matches: There was no change in the team list for the West Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92, as all the regular 5 teams participated in the tournament, like the previous several editions. The tournament is one of the most popular and fruitful domestic cricket tournaments in India and most of the teams that played against each other in the West Zone were representing different states from the Western region of India. The teams included the likes of Saurashtra, Bombay, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Baroda and all of them tried their best to become one of the top two teams in the zone. The teams also gave their best efforts to secure a berth in the knock out level of the tournament. The Bombay and Maharashtra teams earned the highest points from the zonal level league matches and they also eventually became successful to enter into the knock out level of the tournament.

Ranji Trophy, 1991-92, Knock out Matches: All the top two teams from each of the five zones in the tournament got the permission to compete in the knock out level of the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92, the premium domestic cricket tournament in India. The teams did play in their respective zones first and they got the chance for playing in knock out level, as they earned the highest points in their respective zones. The teams competed with each other in the knock out matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 for the championship title and they included the likes of Maharashtra, Bihar, Hyderabad, Madhya Pradesh, Bombay, Delhi, Bengal, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. They played against each other in the Pre-Quarter-Finals, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final of the tournament and the Delhi team eventually became successful to claim the championship title.
