The Bombay and Maharashtra teams entered into the knock out level of the tournament from this zone.

5 regular teams participated in the West Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1988-89, one of the most prestigious domestic cricket tournaments in India. The teams included the likes of Baroda, Bombay, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Saurashtra and most of them were representing different states from the Western region of India. The zone saw all the teams competing with each other with a view to become one of the top two teams in the zone and also to secure a birth in the knock out level of the tournament. The teams like Maharashtra and Bombay eventually became the toppers in the zone and also entered into the knock out level. The Maharashtra team earned a total of 55 points and Bombay earned 46 points, at the end of the zonal level league matches.

The Baroda and Saurashtra teams played against each other in the first of the West Zone league matches of the Ranji Trophy, 1988-89 and the two teams played the match at Baroda from 10-12 December, 1988. The match officials awarded both the Baroda and Saurashtra teams 6 points, each for the drawn match. The teams of Bombay and Gujarat appeared in the second match of the zone, which was held at Bombay from 10-12 December, 1988. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the Bombay and Gujarat teams earned 13 and 4 points, respectively from the match. The third match of the West Zone involved the teams like Gujarat and Maharashtra and the match took place at Pune from 17-19 December, 1988. There was no winner in the match and the Maharashtra and Gujarat teams earned 13 and 8 points, respectively from the drawn match.

The teams of Saurashtra and Bombay took part in the fourth of the West Zone league matches of the Ranji Trophy, 1988-89 and the match was organised at Rajkot from 17-19 December, 1988. The Saurashtra and Bombay teams earned 12 and 11 points, respectively from the match, as it remained drawn during the specified period of time. The Saurashtra team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Maharashtra team at Rajkot from 31 December, 1988 - 02 December, 1989. The drawn match saw the Maharashtra team earning 13 points and Saurashtra earning 7 points from it. The Baroda and Bombay teams then appeared in the next match of the zone that was held at Thane from 31 December, 1988 - 02 December, 1989. The Bombay and Baroda teams earned 14 and 10 points, respectively from the drawn match.

The seventh of the West Zone league matches of the Ranji Trophy, 1988-89 involved the teams like Baroda and Maharashtra and the two teams played the match at Baroda from 07-09 January, 1989. The winner of the match was the Maharashtra team with a very good margin of 9 wickets and the team earned 16 points from the match. The Baroda team earned 5 points from the match, as well. The next match of the zone was played between the teams of Gujarat and Saurashtra and the match took place at Bharuch from 07-09 January, 1989. The drawn match saw the Gujarat and Saurashtra teams earning 12 and 6 points, respectively from it. Appearing in the nest match of the zone, the Gujarat team played against the Baroda team and the match was held at Surat from 21-23 January, 1989. The Baroda and Gujarat teams earned 12 and 8 points, respectively from the drawn match. The last of the West Zone league matches of the Ranji Trophy, 1988-89 saw the teams of Maharashtra and Bombay playing against each other at Aurangabad from 14-16 January, 1989. The match also remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Maharashtra and Bombay teams 13 and 8 points, respectively for the match.
