Ranji Trophy, 1986-87, West Zone League Matches
The toppers in the zone were the Bombay and Gujarat teams.

There was no change in the team list of the West Zone in the tournament, as all the regular 5 teams played against each other under the West Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1986-87. The teams included the likes of Bombay, Baroda, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Saurashtra and they were representing various states situated in the Western region of India. The teams gave their best efforts for becoming one of the top two teams in the zone and also for securing a birth in the knock out level of the tournament. However, the teams like Bombay and Gujarat could eventually do so from the West Zone, as they became the toppers in the zone by earning total of 62 and 44 points, respectively from the zonal level league matches.

The first of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1986-87 was played between the teams of Saurashtra and Bombay at Porbandar from 15-17 November, 1986. The Bombay team got a very good start in the tournament, as it won then match with a wonderful margin of an innings and 11 runs and also earned 24 points from the match. The earnings of the Saurashtra team from the match were 3 points. The Maharashtra and Gujarat teams clashed with each other in the second match of the zone and the match was held at Pune from 15-17 November, 1986. The Maharashtra and Gujarat teams earned 11 and 10 points, respectively from the drawn match. The third match of the zone saw a battle between the teams of Saurashtra and Baroda and the two teams played the match at Navsari from 22-24 November, 1986. The match was also a drawn one and the match officials awarded the Baroda and Saurashtra teams 11 and 7 points, respectively for the match.

The Bombay and Gujarat teams clashed with each other in the next match of the zone during the same timing from 22-24 November, 1986 and the match was held at Thane. The drawn match saw the Gujarat team earning 14 points and Bombay earning 12 points from it. The Bombay team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Baroda team at Bombay from 13-15 December, 1986. The winner of the match was the Bombay team with a huge margin of 10 wickets and the team earned 19 points from the match. The Baroda team earned 6 points from the match, as well. The sixth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1986-87 involved the teams like Saurashtra and Maharashtra and the match was held at Jamnagar from 13-15 December, 1986. The Saurashtra and Maharashtra teams earned 14 and 6 points, respectively from the match, as it remained drawn during the stipulated duration.

There was a clash between the teams of Gujarat and Saurashtra in the seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1986-87 and the clash took place at Surat from 19-21 December, 1986. None of the teams could win the match and the Gujarat and Saurashtra teams earned 14 and 12 points, respectively from the drawn match. The teams of Baroda and Maharashtra played against each other in the next match of the zone and the match was organised at Baroda from 20-22 December, 1986. The match saw the Maharashtra team winning by a good margin of 61 runs and the Maharashtra and Baroda teams earned 17 and 5 points, respectively from the match. The Gujarat team then played against the Baroda team in the next match of the zone, which was held at Broach from 26-28 December, 1986. The Baroda team earned 19 points from the match, by winning it with a margin of 9 wickets and the Gujarat team also earned 6 points from the match. The clash between the teams of Maharashtra and Bombay took place in the last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1986-87 and the BCCI organised the match at Solapur from 26-28 December, 1986. The Bombay and Maharashtra teams earned 7 and 6 points, respectively from the drawn match.
