Pothundi Dam in Kerala is one of the wonders of dam construction in the 19th century.

The Pothundi Dam was constructed with the aim of providing water for irrigation to the district of Palakkad in the state of Kerala. In the 19th century, the Pothundi Dam was built in the Indian state of Kerala. The design of the dam constructed at that time was much ahead of its contemporaries. The construction of the dam was made without using a traditional concrete core. The traditional concrete core was used in the construction of most of the dams in order to counter the force applied by huge water pressure. The core of the Pothundi Dam in Kerala is made up of an unusual blend of quick lime and jaggery.

The south-western coastal region of the Indian sub-continent is dominated by the state of Kerala. This coastal state occupies the region which is called the Malabar Coast. This state is having its borders as the state of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The state of Kerala is in the form of a narrow patch of land which lies in between Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. This offers Kerala a natural setting of greenery where rainfall is plenty and the presence of several inland water bodies. There are also dams constructed in the state in order to store excess water and check the devastation of flood. The Pothundi Dam is built for the purpose of assisting the people of the district of Palakkad in Kerala in cultivating their agricultural lands.

The Pothundi Dam is situated at a distance of about 42 kilometers from Palakkad and at a distance of 8 kilometers from Nemmara. The well-known Nemmara Vallengi Vela festival is organized in the banks of the Pothundi Dam where people visit in large number. This is a dam meant for irrigation, situated close to a small village in the Palakkad district constructed without a conventional concrete core. For the construction of the Pothundi Dam, earth and boulders are used as in case of the construction of other dams. But the cementing material while making Pothundi Dam is an assortment of quick lime and jaggery, in a very distinct way. The strength of the Pothundi Dam is one of the wonders for the present technology.

Pothundi Dam in the state of Kerala is one of the oldest dams of the state which was constructed in 19th century. This dam is in close proximity to a very small village. It lies in the district of Palakkad. This magnificent dam is one of the wonders of primitive technology utilized in the construction of dams. The dam was erected without the use of cement or concrete core. The cementing material in case of the construction of the Pothundi Dam was a peculiar mixture of quick lime and jaggery. It is thus one of the wonders of the state of Kerala as well as India which must be seen while on a tour of the state of Kerala.
