Thikkurisi Sukumaran Nair was a Malayalam actor, author, and film star. He was born in Thikkurisi, Kanniyakumari district (Tamil Nadu) in 1916. He wrote five plays between 1944 and 1949, and then entered movies. His contribution to
Malayalam theatre is memorable. The gradual elimination of musicians and music was prevalent in Tamil theatre at that time. Thus he transformed musical theatre into semi-realistic prose drama. Yet he attracted audiences with stylized declamatory dialogue replete with Sanskritic vocabulary. Invariably, all characters delivered such contrived speeches but, since he related them to ideals or sentiments appealing to the masses, they were welcomed with cheers. His main plays are Kalakaran or `Artist`, Stri or `Woman`, Maya, and Matrnka or `Ideal`. He became one of Malayalam cinemas biggest heroes after the 1951 releases oijivita nauka or `Life Is a Boat`. This was the first Malayalam superhit, in which he played the sympathetic lead. Navalokam or New World is the other one where he was the exploitative employer. Acting on an average in ten films a year, he went on to do character roles of older people, as in Irutinte atmavu or `Soul of Darkness` in 1967 and Abhijatyam or `False Pride` in 1971. Thikkurisi Sukumaran Nair died in 1996.
