Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad advanced to the knock out level.

The South Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84 saw the participation of a number of 5 teams, including the likes of Karnataka, Kerala, Hyderabad, Andhra and Tamil Nadu. The teams were the regular participants in the tournament and they were representing different states from the Southern region of India in the tournament. The teams competed against each other in the zonal level league matches with the same view of becoming one of the top two teams in the zone. The teams were also trying hard to get a promotion to the knock out level of the tournament. However, the teams like Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad eventually entered into the knock out level from the zone and competed with the top teams of the other zones for the championship title. The Tamil Nadu team earned a total of 93 points and Hyderabad earned 79 points from the zonal level league matches.

The South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84, started with the match between the teams of Hyderabad and Andhra and the two teams played the match at Hyderabad from 26-28 November, 1983. The Hyderabad team got a very good start in the tournament, as it won the match with a margin of an innings and 53 runs. The match saw the Hyderabad team earning 31 points and Andhra earning 6 points from it. The Hyderabad team played against the Karnataka team in the second match of the zone at Hyderabad from 03-05 December, 1983. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Hyderabad and Karnataka teams 8 and 5 points, respectively for the match. The third match of the zone was played between the teams of Kerala and Andhra and the match was held at Cochin from 10-12 December, 1983. The Andhra tea played very well in the match and earned 26 points from it, by clinching a huge victory of 9 wickets. The Kerala team earned 4 points from the match, as well.

The Karnataka and Tamil Nadu teams clashed with each other in the fourth of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84 and the clash took place at Bangalore from 17-19 December, 1983. The drawn match saw the Tamil Nadu team earning 6 points and Karnataka earning 5 points from it. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Andhra and Tamil Nadu and the match was held at Vishakhapatnam from 01-03 January, 1984. The Tamil Nadu team earned 30 points from the match by winning it with a good margin of 5 wickets and the Andhra team also earned 3 points from the match. The teams of Kerala and Hyderabad clashed with each other in the next match of the South Zone and the match was organised at Cochin from 22-24 January, 1984. The winner of the match was the Hyderabad team with a margin of an innings and 34 runs and the Hyderabad and Kerala teams earned 30 and 5 points, respectively from the match.

There was a huge clash between the teams of Karnataka and Andhra in the seventh of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84. The two teams played the match at Tirupathi from 22-24 January, 1984 and the Karnataka team won the match by a margin of 141 runs. The match also saw the Karnataka team earning 32 points and Andhra earning 10 points from it. The next match of the zone witnessed a battle between the teams of Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad at Coimbatore from 27-29 January, 1984. The Tamil Nadu team won the match by a margin of 6 wickets and earned 25 points from it. The Hyderabad team earned 10 points from the match, as well. The Karnataka team then played against the Kerala team in the next match of the zone and the match took place at Gulbarga from 28-30 January, 1984. The Karnataka team earned 31 points from the match, by clinching a victory of 176 runs and the Kerala team also earned 4 points from the match. The last of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84 saw a clash between the teams of Tamil Nadu and Kerala at Madras from 02-05 February, 1984. The match was won by the Tamil Nadu team with a very good margin of an innings and 195 runs and it also earned 32 points from the match. The Kerala team earned 2 points from the match, as well.
