The Karnataka team became successful to clinch the title, once again.

ten teams that were promoted to the knock out level of the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 by the tournament organisers, BCCI were mainly the top teams from the five zones. The teams included the likes of Bengal, Bombay, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Baroda, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Karnataka and Orissa and they competed with each other in the knock out matches of the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 for the championship title. The teams played against each other in the Pre-Quarter-Finals, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final match of the tournament. However, the Karnataka team eventually became the champion of the tournament, for yet another time.

The first Pre-Quarter-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 was played between the teams of Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh and the match was held at Madras from 29 January-01 February, 1983. The Tamil Nadu team played very well in the match and clinched a narrow victory of 4 wickets for entering into the Quarter-Final stage of the tournament. The teams of Baroda and Rajasthan clashed with each other in the second Pre-Quarter-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83. The match was held at Baroda from 29 January-01 February 1983 and though it remained drawn during the stipulated duration, the match officials allowed the Baroda team to advance to the Quarter-Finals of the tournament.

The match between the teams of Delhi and Tamil Nadu was the first Quarter-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 and the two teams played the match at Delhi from 11-14 February, 1983. The drawn match saw the Delhi team getting the permission of competing in the Semi-Final stage of the tournament. The second Quarter-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 saw a clash between the teams of Haryana and Bengal at Faridabad from 11-14 February, 1983. The Haryana team advance to the Semi-Finals of the tournament by winning this match with a margin of 71 runs. The clash between the teams of Baroda and Karnataka took place in the third Quarter-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 and the match was held at Baroda from 11-14 February, 1983. The Karnataka team won the match by 114 runs and entered into the Semi-Finals of the tournament. The last and fourth Quarterfinal match of the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 was played between the teams of Bombay and Orissa and the two teams played the match at Bombay from 11-14 February, 1983. The match saw the Bombay team winning by a huge margin of an innings and 255 runs and also getting into the Semi-Final stage of the tournament.

The teams of Haryana and Karnataka played against each other in the first Semi-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83, which was held at Faridabad from 25-28 February 1983. The winner of the match was the Karnataka team with a very good margin of an innings and 27 runs and the team entered into the Final of the tournament, as well. The second Semi-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 saw a battle between the teams of Delhi and Bombay at Delhi from 25-28 February 1983. Though, the match was a drawn one, the match officials declared the Bombay team as the winner, as it was leading in the first innings of the match. Thus, the Bombay and Karnataka teams locked their horns together in the Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83, which was played at Bombay from 11-15 March 1983. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials declared the Karnataka team as the winner of the match and also the champion of the tournament.
