The Bihar team failed to reach the knock out level, as Orissa and Bengal teams became the toppers in the zone.

The East Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 saw the participation of a number of 4 teams, all the regular ones coming from the Eastern region of India. The teams included the likes of Bihar, Orissa, Assam and Bengal and they played against each other in the zonal level with a view to claim the top spot in the zone. Advancing to the knock out level of the tournament was also another main aim of the teams, however, only the teams like Orissa and Bengal could achieve this aim. The Orissa team played wonderfully in the zonal level and entered into the knock out level for the first time with total 15 points, at the end of the zonal level matches. The Bengal team earned 14 points from the league matches and the two teams competed against the top teams of the other zones in the knock out level, for the championship title.

The teams of Assam and Bihar clashed with each other in the first of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 and the two teams played the match at Dibrugarh from 04-06 December, 1982. The Bihar team earned 6 points and Assam earned 3 points from the match, as it remained drawn during the stipulated duration. The Assam team played against the Orissa team in the second match of the East Zone and the match was held at Dibrugarh from 10-12 December, 1982. The Orissa team got a very good start in the tournament, as it earned 8 valuable points from the match, by winning it with a huge margin of 10 wickets.

The Bengal and Bihar teams appeared in the third of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 and the match took place at Krishnanagar from 11-13 December, 1982. The match was a drawn one during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Bengal and Bihar teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The next match of the zone saw the Bengal team clashing with the Assam team at Dibrugarh from 17-19 December, 1982. The match also went on to be a drawn one during the stipulated duration and the Bengal and Assam teams earned 6 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match.

The Orissa and Bihar teams then played against each other in the fifth match of the zone and the match was held at Patna from 17-19 December 1982. The match officials awarded both the Orissa and Bihar teams 2 points, each for the match, as it remained drawn during the stipulated duration. The last of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1982-83 saw a huge clash between the teams of Orissa and Bengal at Asansol from 23-25 December 1982. The drawn match saw the Orissa team earning 5 points and Bengal earning 3 points from it.
