The Bombay and Saurashtra teams proved them to be better than all the other teams in the zone.

The West Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1981-82 was comprised of a number of 5 teams including the likes of Baroda, Bombay, Saurashtra, Gujarat and Maharashtra. All the regular participants of the tournament were representing the Western region of India in the tournament and they tried their best to clinch the top spot of the zone. The main reason behind their this endeavour was to get a chance in the knock out level of the tournament, where the top two teams from all the zones competed against each other for the championship title. However, only the teams like Bombay and Saurashtra became successful to enter into the knock out level of the tournament from the West Zone. The Bombay team earned a total of 27 points and Saurashtra earned 22 points, after the zonal level league matches were completed.

The teams of Maharashtra and Bombay played against each other in the first of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1981-82 and the match was held at Bombay from 23-25 October, 1981. The Bombay team played very well in the match and clinched a victory of an innings and 61 runs for earning 9 points from it. The Saurashtra and Baroda teams then played against each other in the second match of the zone at Bhavnagar from 23-25 October, 1981. The winner of the match was the Saurashtra team with a margin of 107 runs and the team earned 8 valuable points from the match, as well. The Saurashtra team was a part of the third match of the zone also, as it clashed with the Bombay team in the match. The match was held at Bombay from 13-15 November, 1981 and the drawn match saw the Bombay and Saurashtra teams earning 5 and 3 points, respectively from it.

The match between the teams of Gujarat and Maharashtra was the fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1981-82. The two teams played the match at Bulsar from 13-15 November, 1981 and the match remained drawn during the stipulated duration. The Gujarat and Maharashtra teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match. The Gujarat team then clashed with the Bombay team in the next match of the zone and the match took place at Nadiad from 04-06 December, 1981. The match saw the Bombay team earning 8 points from it, by clinching a victory of an innings and 24 runs. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Maharashtra and Baroda and the two teams clashed with each other at Sholapur from 04-06 December, 1981. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the Maharashtra and Baroda teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match.

The seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1981-82 saw a clash between the teams of Baroda and Bombay at Baroda from 16-18 December, 1981. The match was also a drawn one and the match officials awarded the Bombay and Baroda teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The teams of Saurashtra and Gujarat then played against each other in the next match of the zone at Jamnagar from 16-18 December, 1981. The winner of the match was the Saurashtra team with a huge margin of 10 wickets and the teams earned 8 valuable points from the match, as well. The Gujarat team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Baroda team at Baroda from 08-10 January, 1982. Playing wonderfully in the match, the Baroda team earned 8 valuable points from it by clinching a victory of an innings and 110 runs. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1981-82 saw a clash between the teams of Saurashtra and Maharashtra and the match was held at Pune from 08-10 January, 1982. The Maharashtra and Saurashtra teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match.
