There was no change in the team list of the West Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1979-80, as all the regular 5 teams of the zone took part in this edition of the tournament. The teams included the likes of Bombay, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Saurashtra and Baroda and they tried their best to claim the top spot in the zone. However, the teams like Bombay and Maharashtra eventually became the toppers in the zone. They also went on to compete with the top teams of the other zones in the knock out level of the tournament, for the championship title.
The first of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1979-80 was played between the teams of Saurashtra and Gujarat at Jamnagar from 10-12 November, 1979. The Saurashtra and Gujarat teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match, as it remained drawn after the specified period of time. The Maharashtra and Baroda teams played against each other in the second match of the zone and the match was held at Kolhapur from 11-13 November, 1979. The drawn match saw the Maharashtra and Baroda teams earning 5 and 3 points, respectively from it. The Maharashtra team appeared in the third match of the zone against the Bombay team and the match took place at Bombay from 30 November-02 December, 1979. The match officials awarded the Bombay and Maharashtra teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the drawn match.
The teams that played against each other in the fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1979-80 were the Baroda and Gujarat teams and they played the match at Baroda from 30 November-02 December, 1979. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Baroda and Gujarat teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The next match of the zone saw a battle between the teams of Maharashtra and Saurashtra at Satara from 28-30 December, 1979. The drawn match saw the Saurashtra team earning 5 points and Maharashtra earning 3 points from it. The Saurashtra team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Bombay team at Bombay from 08-10 January, 1980. The Bombay team played very well in the match and earned 9 points from it, by winning with a huge margin of 8 wickets.
The Saurashtra and Baroda teams appeared in the seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1979-80 that was held at Gondal from 09-11 February, 1980. None of the teams could win the match and Baroda and Saurashtra teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match. The match between the teams of Bombay and Gujarat was also held during the same timing from 09-11 February, 1980 and the match was held at Bulsar. The drawn match saw the Bombay team earning 5 points and Gujarat earning 3 points from it. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Baroda and Bombay and the match took place at Baroda from 23-25 February, 1980. The match also remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Bombay and Baroda teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1979-80 was played between the teams of Gujarat and Maharashtra and the match took place at Nadiad from 23-25 February, 1980. The winner of the match was the Maharashtra team with a margin of 57 runs and the team earned 8 points from the match, as well.
