The West Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1977-78 was comprised of 5 teams and all the teams were the regular participants in the tournament. The teams were representing the Western region of India in the tournament and they included the likes of Saurashtra, Maharashtra, Bombay, Gujarat and Baroda. The teams fought with each other very hard in the zonal level with an objective to become the topper in the zone and also to get a chance of entering into the knock out level of the tournament. However, the teams like Gujarat and Maharashtra became successful to do get a chance in the knock out level of the tournament from the West Zone.

The West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1977-78 started with the match between the teams of Saurashtra and Gujarat at Rajkot from 05-07 November, 1977. The Gujarat team was the winner of the match with a margin of 128 runs and the team also earned 8 points from the match. The clash between the teams of Gujarat and Maharashtra took place in the second match of the zone and the match was held at Bulsar from 19-21 November, 1977. The Gujarat team played very well in this match also and clinched a victory of an innings and 138 runs for earning 8 points from it. The third match of the zone saw a clash between the teams of Bombay and Saurashtra at Bombay from 26-28 November, 1977. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration of time and the match officials awarded the Bombay and Saurashtra teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match.

There was a clash between the teams of Bombay and Baroda teams in the fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1977-78 and the match took place at Baroda from 03-05 December, 1977. The drawn match saw the Baroda team earned 5 points and Bombay earning 3 points from it. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Maharashtra and Saurashtra and the two teams played the match at Pune from 05-07 December, 1977. The winner of the match was the Maharashtra team with a margin of 8 wickets and the team also earned 8 points from the match. The Bombay team then played against the Maharashtra team in the next match at Bombay from 10-12 December, 1977. The match officials awarded the Bombay and Maharashtra teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match, as it remained drawn during the specified period of time.

The seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1977-78 was held at Baroda from 10-12 December, 1977 between the teams of Baroda and Gujarat. The match saw the Gujarat team winning quite comprehensively by a margin of 130 runs and also earning 8 points from it. The next match saw the two teams of Maharashtra and Baroda clashing with each other at Aurangabad from 24-26 December, 1977. The match was drawn during the stipulated duration and the Maharashtra and Baroda teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match. Then the two teams of Gujarat and Bombay locked their horns together in the next match of the zone at Bulsar from 24-26 December, 1977. The Gujarat team played extraordinarily in the match and thrashed the Bombay team by a huge margin of an innings and 233 runs for earning 8 valuable points. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1977-78 was played between the teams of Saurashtra and Baroda at Jamnagar from 31 December, 1977 - 02 January, 1978. The Saurashtra and Baroda teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match.
