Pushpamitra was a king of Pataliputra, who acquired the throne about 178 B.C.

Pushpamitra was a king of Pataliputra, who acquired the throne about 178 B.C.

In the Matsya Purana it is mentioned that Pushpatmitra reigned for thirty-six years. It was during this reign that Patanjali lived and wrote his commentary on Panini. He probably wrote the third chapter of his Bhashya between 144 and 142 B. C.
