Niyama is described as the second stage of Yoga, which helps in increasing the self-control. The Niyama has five stages. Niyama helps in giving purity of mind and body, cheerfulness under all circumstances, religious austerity, the repetition of incantations and lastly the association of all religious ceremonies with the Supreme Being.

The above five stages of Niyama are selected as five duties or obligations. They are mainly purity, contentment, devotion, study of the Vedas, and adoration of the God.
