Madan Mohan Lenka was born in the year 1914. He was born in Baripada, Orissa. He was trained at the Uttarsahi Chhau Akhada there under gurus like Kandrababu, Chandra Mohan Tarai, Baishnabajitbabu, and Mukunda Chandra Samal. The erstwhile rulers of Mayurbhanj, patrons of the form, employed him as a dancer at their court. Many of Lenka`s choreographic innovations have become standard numbers in the Chhau repertoire. Later, he was guru at Mayurbhanj Chhau Nritya Pratisthan in Baripada. Many students from that place have now become famous.
