Hemachandra was the king of Vaisali, a place celebrated amongst the Buddhists as the chief seat of the labours of Sakhya and his first disciples, presently Allahabad. Hemachandra was a zealous propagator of the Jain doctrines in the twelfth century. He was well versed in peculiarity of the system, which he taught. He was the author of useful vocabulary termed the Abhidana Chintamani, and of a life of Maha Vira.
