The history of Assamese cinema unfolds the fact that cinema in Assam began straight way with a Talkie. The early Assamese films centered on legendary genius, Rupkonar Jyotiprasad Agarwala and it was his dream, versatility and genius that ushered in the feel of contemporaneousness in Assamese films. That was just the beginning later the Assamese directors teamed with the Assamese actors offered a whole new facet to Assamese cinema.

The Assamese actors mostly hail from the stage. This has been true for great Assamese actors like Phani Sarma. He was instrumental in establishing the Assamese film industry. It was he who made the first Assamese movie in 1935, Joymati. Apart from being a popular actor he was also a well known playwright. Such talented Assamese actors have for years adorned the silver screen and entertained the audiences.

The star system in India is such that the masses literally worship their onscreen heroes and heroines. This is also true for the Assamese film industry as well. Apart from entertaining the audiences they have also achieved recognition at the national arena for their superb performances. As is the case with the Oriya movies in the Assamese movies too stars from Bollywood have appeared. Bindiya Goswami is one of them.
