The West Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1972-73 was comprised of the regular teams like Bombay, Maharashtra, Saurashtra, Baroda and Gujarat. All the teams had been playing in the tournament for several years till then and they were representing the Western India in the tournament. The teams played against each other in the zonal level first and their main aim was to become one of the top two teams in the zone and also to enter into the knock out level of the tournament. However, the teams like Bombay and Maharashtra eventually became successful to do so from the West Zone.

The Maharashtra and Bombay teams played the first of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1972-73 and the match was held at Poona from 11-13 November, 1972. The match was drawn during the stipulated duration and the Maharashtra and Bombay teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match. The Bombay team was a part of the second match also and this time, it played against the Baroda team at Bombay from 01-02 December, 1972. The Bombay team played wonderfully in the match and clinched a huge victory of an innings and 7 runs to earn 8 points from it. The third match of the zone saw a clash between the teams of Saurashtra and Bombay and the match was held at Rajkot from 09-11 December, 1972. The Bombay team played nicely once again in this match and won it by 10 wickets for earning 8 points from the match.

The fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1972-73 involved the teams of Baroda and Maharashtra at Baroda from 09-11 December, 1972. The match saw the Maharashtra team winning by a huge margin of an innings and 16 runs for earning 8 points from it. The next match of the zone was played between the teams of Gujarat and Baroda at Nadiad from 16-18 December, 1972, where the Gujarat team won by 5 wickets for earning 8 points from it. The teams of Saurashtra and Maharashtra met with each other in the next match at Surendranagar from 16-18 December, 1972. The Maharashtra team played wonderfully in the match and earned 8 points from it, by winning with a margin of 9 wickets.

There was a clash between the teams of Gujarat and Saurashtra in the seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1972-73 at Surat from 30 December, 1972 - 02 January, 1973. The Gujarat team played well in this match also and clinched a huge victory of 9 wickets for earning 9 points from it. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Baroda and Saurashtra and the two teams played the match at Baroda from 06-08 January, 1973. The drawn match saw the Baroda team earning 5 points and Saurashtra 3 points from it. The Bombay team then played against the Gujarat team in the next match of the West Zone and the match took place at Bombay from 06-08 January, 1973. Playing very well in the match, the Bombay team defeated the Gujarat team by a huge margin of an innings and 82 runs and also earned 8 points from it. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1972-73 saw a battle between the teams of Maharashtra and Gujarat at Poona from 20-22 January, 1973, where the Maharashtra team won by an innings and 6 runs, The Maharashtra team earned 8 valuable points from the match, as well.
