Delhi and Railways went on to the knock out level from this zone.

The North Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1972-73 saw the participation of a number of 6 teams, all coming from the Northern region of India. The teams that took part in the tournament included the likes of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Railways and Services. All the teams played against each other in the zonal level for becoming one of the top two teams in the zone and also for getting a chance in the knock out level of the tournament. However, only the teams of Delhi and Railways became successful to do so from the North Zone and they competed with the top teams of the other zones in the knock out level for the championship level.

The teams of Jammu & Kashmir and Services played the first of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1972-73 and the two teams played the match at Srinagar from 23-25 September 1972. The Services team played wonderfully in the match and earned 8 valuable points from the match, by winning it with a huge margin of an innings and 15 runs. The next match of the zone was played between the teams of Railways and Jammu & Kashmir and the match was held at Srinagar from 28-30 September 1972. The Railways team won the match by a huge margin of 10 wickets and also earned 9 points from it to get a good start in the tournament. The teams of Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir appeared in the next match of the zone at Srinagar from 03-05 October, 1972. The match was drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match.

The fourth of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1972-73 saw a clash between the teams of Jammu & Kashmir and Delhi at Srinagar from 08-10 October, 1972. The Delhi team got a very good start in the tournament, as it won the match by 10 wickets and also earned 9 points from the match. The next match of the tournament involved the teams like Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir and the match took place at Jammu from 13-15 October, 1972. The match saw the Punjab team winning by an innings and 32 runs and also earning 9 points from it. The teams of Delhi and Services then clashed with each other in the next match of the North Zone at Delhi from 20-22 October, 1972. The Delhi team played wonderfully in the match and clinched a victory of an innings and 91 runs and earned 8 valuable points from it, as well.

The match between the teams of Haryana and Railways was the seventh of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1972-73 and the match took place at Kurukshetra from 20-22 October, 1972. The winner of the match was the Railways team with a margin of 9 wickets and the team also earned 8 valuable points from the match. The next match saw a battle between the teams of Punjab and Railways at Patiala from 24-26 October, 1972. The drawn match saw the Punjab and Railways teams earning 5 and 3 points, respectively from it. The teams of Services and Haryana then played against each other in the next match of the zone and the match was held at Delhi from 24-26 October, 1972. The Services team played well in the match and earned 8 points from it, by winning it with a margin of 30 runs.

The tenth of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1972-73 involved the teams of Delhi and Haryana. The match that was held at Chandigarh from 02-04 November, 1972 saw the Delhi team winning by 7 wickets and also earning 8 valuable points from it. Then the teams of Services and Punjab met with each other at Delhi during the same timing from 02-04 November, 1972. The Services and Punjab teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match, as it remained drawn during the specified duration. The two teams of Railways and Delhi tasted each other`s power in the next match of the zone that was held at Delhi from 06-08 November, 1972. The Delhi team dominated the Railways team throughout the match and eventually clinched a victory of an innings and 33 runs for earning 8 points from the match.

There was a clash between the teams of Railways and Services in the next match of the North Zone and the match took place at Delhi from 13-15 November, 1972. The closely contested match was won by the Railways team with a narrow margin of 3 wickets and the team also earned 8 valuable points from the match. The 14th of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1972-73 was played between the teams of Delhi and Punjab at Delhi from 13-November, 1972. The drawn match saw the Punjab and Delhi teams earning 5 and 3 points, respectively from it. The Punjab team appeared in the last match of the North Zone also and this time, it played against the Haryana team at Jullundar from 24-26 November, 1972. This was another drawn match and the match officials awarded the Haryana and Punjab teams 5 and 3 points, for the match.
