Bombay, along with Maharashtra entered into the knock out level and eventually won the championship title.

The West Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1970-71 was comprised of a number of 5 teams, all the regular ones from the Western region of India. The teams that took part in the zone included the likes of Bombay, Maharashtra, Baroda, Gujarat and Saurashtra. The teams compete with each other in the zonal level for becoming one of the top two teams in the zone and also for getting a chance in the knock out level of the tournament. However, the Bombay and Maharashtra teams eventually became successful to compete with the top teams of the other zones in the knock out level, for the championship title.

The West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1970-71, started with the match between the teams of Bombay and Baroda and the match was held at Bombay from 07-09 November, 1970. The Bombay team got a very good start in the tournament, as it won the match with a huge margin of an innings and 89 runs and also earned 8 valuable points from the match. The second match of the zone was played between the teams of Maharashtra and Gujarat at Poona from 07-09 November, 1970. The match saw the Maharashtra team earning 9 points by winning with a huge margin of 9 wickets. The Bombay team played against the Gujarat team in the third match of the zone and the match was held at Bombay from 14-16 November, 1970. The match was drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Bombay and Gujarat teams 6 and 3 points, respectively for the match.

There was a clash between the teams of Baroda and Saurashtra in the fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1970-71. The match that held at Baroda from 14-16 November, 1970 was a drawn one and it saw the Baroda team earning 5 points and Saurashtra earning 3 points from it. The Bombay and Maharashtra teams clashed with each other in the fifth match of the West Zone and the match took place at Poona from 21-23 November, 1970. The match officials awarded both the Bombay and Maharashtra teams 3 points each for the drawn match. The next match saw a clash between the teams of Gujarat and Saurashtra at Vallabh Vidyanagar from 21-23 November, 1970. This was another drawn match and the Saurashtra and Gujarat teams earned 5 and 3 points from the match.

The seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1970-71 was played between the teams of Bombay and Saurashtra at Junagadh from 04-05 December, 1970. The Bombay team played very well in the match and clinched a huge victory of an innings and 82 runs for earning 8 valuable points from it. The Baroda and Maharashtra teams took part in the next match of the West Zone and the match was held at Baroda from 05-07 December, 1970. The drawn match saw the Maharashtra and Baroda teams earning 6 and 3 points, respectively from it. The Maharashtra team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Saurashtra team at Rajkot from 12-14 December, 1970. The Maharashtra team played wonderfully in the match and got a huge victory of an innings and 3 runs for earning 8 valuable points from it. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1970-71 saw a battle between the teams of Gujarat and Baroda at Ahmedabad from 12-14 December, 1970. There was no winner in the match and the match officials awarded both the Gujarat and Baroda teams 4 points each for the drawn match.
