Ranji Trophy, 1970-71, East Zone League Matches
Bengal and Bihar teams retained their leadership in the zonal level.

The East Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1970-71 was comprised of a number of 4 teams, including the likes of Bengal, Assam, Orissa and Bihar. All the teams were representing the Eastern region of India and they competed hard with each other for securing a birth in the knock out level of the tournament. The teams like Bengal and Bihar once again became the toppers in the East Zone and they also went on to play in the knock out level for the championship title.

The match between the teams of Assam and Orissa at Nowgong from 24-26 November, 1970 was the first of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1970-71. The teams clashed with each other with an aim to get a good start in the tournament and the match saw the Assam team winning by 3 wickets. The Assam team also earned 8 valuable points from the match. The next match saw a clash between the teams of Assam and Bihar at Nowgong from 01-02 December, 1970, where the Bihar team won by a huge margin of an innings and 38 runs to earn 8 points from it.

The teams of Bengal and Orissa took part in the third of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1970-71 and the match was held at Calcutta from 01-03 December, 1970. The Bengal team got a wonderful start in the tournament, as it won the match with a big margin of an innings and 122 runs. The Bengal team also earned the entire 9 points from the match. The Orissa team appeared in the next match also and this time, it played against the Bihar team at Patna from 07-09 December, 1970. The Bihar team played well in this match also and clinched a huge victory of an innings and 135 runs to earn 8 valuable points from it.

The next match of the East Zone saw a battle between the teams of Bengal and Assam, when the two teams played against each other at Nowgong from 07-09 December, 1970. The Bengal team played wonderfully in the match and clinched a victory of an innings and 8 runs for earning 8 points from the match. The last of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1970-71 saw the two most powerful teams of the zone, Bengal and Bihar clashing with each other at Calcutta from 13-15 December, 1970. The drawn match saw the Bihar team earning 5 points and Bengal earning 3 points from it.
