The toppers in the zone were the Mysore and Hyderabad teams.

The South Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1969-70 was comprised of a number of 5 teams, including the likes of Kerala, Madras, Mysore, Hyderabad and Andhra. The teams were representing the Southern region of India in the tournament and they played against each other for securing a birth in the knock out level of the tournament. The teams like Mysore and Hyderabad became the top two teams in the zone and as a result, they got a promotion into the knock out level of the tournament.

The match between the teams of Kerala and Andhra was the first of the South Zone League matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1969-70 and the match was held at Trivandrum from 02-04 August, 1969. The match was drawn during the stipulated duration and it saw the Andhra and Kerala teams earning 5 and 3 points, respectively from it. The Andhra team played the second match of the South Zone against the Mysore team at Guntur from 09-11 August, 1969 and it lost the match by a margin of 10 wickets. The Mysore team also earned 9 points for winning the match. The third match of the South Zone also saw the Andhra team taking part, as this time, it played against the Madras team at Vijayawada from 15-17 August 1969. The drawn match saw both the Madras and Andhra teams earning 5 points each, for the match.

The Kerala and Hyderabad teams then played against each other in the fourth of the South Zone League matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1969-70 and the match was held at Trivandrum from 16-18 August, 1969. The Hyderabad team played wonderfully in the match and clinched a huge victory of 10 wickets for earning 8 valuable points from it. The Hyderabad team then played against the Madras team in the next match of the zone at Madras from 22-24 August, 1969. The match was drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Madras and Hyderabad teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The sixth match of the zone saw a clash between the teams of Mysore and Kerala at Bijapur from 23-25 August, 1969. Playing well in the match, the Mysore team won it by a margin of 7 wickets and also earned 9 points from it.

The seventh of the South Zone League matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1969-70 was played between the teams of Madras and Kerala at Sankarnagar from 05-07 September, 1969. The Madras team earned 8 points from the match, by winning it with a huge margin of 5 wickets. The Mysore and Hyderabad teams then met with each other in the next match at Hyderabad from 05-07 September, 1969. The drawn match saw the Mysore team earning 5 points and Hyderabad earning 3 points from it. The Hyderabad team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Andhra team at Hyderabad from 19-21 September, 1969. This was another drawn match in the zone and the match officials awarded both the teams 3 points each, for the match. The most powerful teams of the South Zone, Madras and Mysore locked their horns together in the last of the South Zone League matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1969-70 and the match was held at Bangalore from 22-24 November 1969. The drawn match saw the Madras and Mysore teams earning 5 and 3 points, respectively from it.
