Madras and Hyderabad advanced to the knock out level from this zone.

There were a number of 5 teams participated in the South Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1964-65, all representing the South India in the tournament. The teams included the likes of Madras, Hyderabad, Mysore, Andhra and Kerala and though all of them tried hard, only the Madras and Hyderabad teams became successful to secure a birth in the knock out level of the tournament. These two teams became the toppers among the teams of the South Zone.

The South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1964-65 started with the match between the teams of Hyderabad and Madras and the match was held at Secunderabad from 05-07 September, 1964. The match was drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Hyderabad and Madras teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The second match of the zone saw a battle between the teams of Madras and Mysore and the match was held at Madras from 19-21 September, 1964. The match saw the Madras team winning by a huge margin of an innings and 14 runs and also earning 8 points from it. The third of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1964-65 was played between the teams of Mysore and Hyderabad. The match was held at Bangalore from 07-09 November, 1964 and it saw the Hyderabad team winning by 4 wickets and earning 8 valuable points from it.

The fourth of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1964-65 involved the teams of Andhra and Hyderabad and the match took place at Vishakhapatnam from 25-27 December, 1964. The Hyderabad team won the match by a margin of 8 wickets and earned 8 valuable points from it. The next match of the South Zone was played between the teams of Kerala and Madras and the match was held at Tellicherry from 25-27 December, 1964. The winner of the match was the Madras team with a margin of 6 wickets and the teams also earned 9 points from it. The Kerala team then played against the Andhra team in the next match of the zone and it was held at Anantapur from 04-06 January, 1965. The Andhra team played wonderfully in the match and won it by a huge margin of an innings and 148 runs.

There was a clash between the teams of Hyderabad and Kerala in the seventh of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1964-65 and the match was held at Hyderabad from 09-11 January, 1965. The Hyderabad the won the match by a huge margin of 10 wickets and earned the full 9 points from the match. Then, the teams of Andhra and Madras clashed with each other in the next match of the zone that was held at Coimbatore from 09-10 January, 1965. The winner of the match was the Madras team with a huge margin of an innings and 88 runs and earned 8 valuable points from it. The teams of Mysore and Andhra then met with each other in the ninth match of the South Zone and the match was held at Bangalore from 15-17 January, 1965. The Mysore team clinched a huge victory of 233 runs in the match for earning 8 valuable points from it. The last of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1964-65 saw the teams of Mysore and Kerala clashing with each other at Trivandrum from 30 January-02 February, 1965. The Mysore team continued its wonderful form in this match also and won it comprehensively by 10 wickets for earning 8 valuable points from the match.
