Bombay continued to win the trophy for the seventh consecutive time.

The Ranji Trophy, 1964-65 was one of the successful and popular editions of the tournament and it saw the participation from a large number of 24 teams, coming from all over India. This was the highest number of teams that participated in the tournament till then and the teams included the likes of Andhra, Assam, Baroda, Bengal, Bihar, Bombay, Delhi, Gujarat, Hyderabad, Jammu & Kashmir, Kerala, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Madras, Mysore, Northern Punjab, Orissa, Railways, Rajasthan, Saurashtra, Southern Punjab, Services, Uttar Pradesh and the Vidarbha.

Ranji Trophy, 1964-65 Central Zone League Matches: There were a number of 4 teams played against each other under the Central Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1964-65. All the teams were coming from the Central region of India and they competed with each other for earning a birth in the knock out level of the tournament. The teams included the likes of Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, and the Vidarbha and Uttar Pradesh teams became the toppers of the zone.

Ranji Trophy, 1964-65 East Zone League Matches: The East Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1964-65 was comprised of the teams like Bengal, Assam, Orissa and Bihar and all the came from the Eastern region of India. The teams competed hard with each other in the zonal level for getting a promotion into the knock out level of the tournament, however, only the teams like Bengal and Bihar could do so from the East Zone.

Ranji Trophy, 1964-65 North Zone League Matches: The North Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1964-65 saw a fierce battle between 6 teams, who competed with each other for getting into the knock out level of the tournament. The teams included the state teams like Delhi, Southern Punjab, Northern Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir and also the non-state teams like Railways and Services. The teams like Delhi and Services became successful to clinch the top two positions in the zone and they also got a chance to compete with the other teams in the knock out level of the tournament.

Ranji Trophy, 1964-65 South Zone League Matches: There were a number of 5 teams participated in the South Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1964-65, all representing the South India in the tournament. The teams included the likes of Madras, Hyderabad, Mysore, Andhra and Kerala and though all of them tried hard, only the Madras and Mysore teams became successful to secure a birth in the knock out level of the tournament. These two teams became the toppers among the teams of the South Zone.

Ranji Trophy, 1964-65 West Zone League Matches: The West Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1964-65 saw the participation of a number of 5 teams including the likes of Bombay, Baroda, Gujarat, Saurashtra and Maharashtra. All the teams came from the Western regions of India and they tried their best to enter into the knock out level of the tournament. However, the champion of the previous year, Bombay and the Maharashtra team became successful to do so from the West Zone.

Ranji Trophy, 1964-65 Knock out Matches: The knock out matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1964-65 started in the month of February, 1965, once all the matches of the zonal level were finished and the top teams of the zones were also finalized. The teams that became successful to enter into the knock out level of the tournament included the likes of Bengal, Hyderabad, Bombay, Services and Uttar Pradesh and they competed with each other in the Quarter-Final, Semi-Finals and the Final of the tournament.
