The West Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1963-64 saw the participation of 5 teams including the likes of Bombay, Maharashtra, Baroda, Gujarat and Saurashtra. The teams played against each other in the zonal stage first and then went into play with the teams of the other zones in the knock out level. However, the teams like Bombay and Baroda were promoted to the knock out level of the tournament from the West Zone.

The South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1963-64 started with the match between the teams of Bombay and Maharashtra at Bombay from 20-22 October, 1963. The match was drawn during the stipulated duration and the Bombay team earned 5 points and Maharashtra earned 3 points from it. The second match saw a clash between the teams of Baroda and Gujarat at Baroda from 02-03 November, 1963 and the drawn match saw the Baroda team earning 6 points and Gujarat earning 3 points from it. The Gujarat team then played against the Bombay team at Vallabh from 03-05 November, 1963. This was also a drawn match and the Bombay and Gujarat teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from it.

The fourth of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1963-64 was played between the teams of Saurashtra and Baroda at Rajkot from 09-10 November, 1963. The Baroda team won the match by an innings and 21 runs to earn 8 valuable points. The Saurashtra team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Gujarat team at Jamnagar from 16-18 November, 1963. The drawn match saw the Gujarat team earning 5 points and Saurashtra earning 3 points from it. The next match involved the teams of Baroda and Maharashtra and the match took place at Baroda from 23-25 November, 1963. As this match was also drawn, the match officials awarded the Maharashtra and Baroda teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match.

There was a clash between the teams of Gujarat and Maharashtra in the seventh of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1963-64 and the match was played at Surat from 29 November-01 December, 1963. Maharashtra won the match by 10 wickets and earned 9 valuable points from it. The two leading teams of the zone, Bombay and Baroda then locked their horns together in the next match at Baroda from 30 November-02 December, 1963. The Bombay team proved its superiority in the match by winning it by an innings and 130 runs and earning 9 points from it. Then, the two teams of Maharashtra and Saurashtra played against each other at Poona from 05-07 December, 1963 and the match was declared as a drawn one. The last of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1963-64 saw a clash between the teams of Bombay and Saurashtra at Bombay from 10-12 December, 1963, where Bombay won by 10 wickets to earn 8 valuable points.
