The zone saw a tough competition among the teams.

A number of 6 teams played their league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1961-62, under the North Zone. The teams included the likes of Northern Punjab, Delhi, Southern Punjab, Services, Jammu & Kashmir and the Railways. All the teams played well in the zonal level and the teams like Delhi and Railways became successful to enter into the knock out level of the tournament.

The league matches of the North Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1961-62 started with the match between the teams of Northern Punjab and Delhi at Jullundar from 14-16 October, 1961. The Delhi team played well in the match and earned 9 points from it, by defeating its opponents by 5 wickets. The second of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1961-62 was played between the Southern Punjab and Delhi teams. The teams played the match at Patiala from 18-20 October, 1961 and the Delhi team narrowly won the match by 3 runs, earning 9 points. The clash between the teams of Northern Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir was held at Jullundar from 22-24 October, 1961 and the match saw the Northern Punjab team winning by an innings and 183 runs. The Northern Punjab team also earned 9 points from the match.

The fourth of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1961-62 was held at Patiala between the teams of Southern Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir from 27-28 October, 1961. The Southern Punjab team played wonderfully in the match and clinched a huge victory of an innings and 26 runs to earn 9 points from it. The next match of the North Zone saw a battle between the teams of Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir at Delhi from 31 October-01 November, 1961. The Delhi team earned 8 valuable points from the match by winning it with a margin of an innings and 294 runs. The Jammu & Kashmir teams then played against each other in the next match of the zone at Delhi from 04-05 November, 1961, where the Railways team won by an innings and 148 runs. The Railways team also earned the entire 9 points from the match.

The teams of Services and Jammu & Kashmir met with each other at Delhi from 08-09 November, 1961 and the winner of the match was the Services team with a margin of an innings and 36 runs. It was a battle between the teams of Delhi and Services in the eighth of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1961-62. The match took place at Delhi from 22-24 November, 1961 and the match was drawn during its stipulated duration. The Delhi team earned 5 points and Services earned 4 points from the match. The next league match of the North Zone was played between the teams of Railways and Services at Delhi from 26-28 November, 1961, where the Railways team became successful to clinch a narrow win of only 2 runs. The win gave the Railways 9 valuable points. The match between the teams of Northern Punjab and Services took place at Ferozepore from 01-03 December, 1961 and it was drawn during the specified duration. The drawn match saw the Northern Punjab team winning 5 points and Services earning 3 points from it.

In the eleventh of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1961-62, the teams of Southern Punjab and Services clashed with each other at Patiala from 05-06 December, 1961. The teams of Services and Southern Punjab won 6 and 3 points, respectively from the match, as it went on to draw during its stipulated duration. Then the teams of Railways and Northern Punjab played against each other in the next match of the zone at Delhi from 25-27 December, 1961. The Railways team convincingly won the match by a huge margin of an innings and 57 runs and also earned the full 9 points from the match. The two teams from Punjab, the Southern Punjab and Northern Punjab, locked their horns together in the next match of the zone and the match was held at Jullundar from 05-07 January, 1962. The drawn match saw the Southern Punjab team earning 5 points and Northern Punjab earning 3 points from it. The teams of Railways and Southern Punjab then clashed with each other at Delhi from 21-23 December, 1961. The Railways team earned 9 points from the match by winning it with a margin of 4 wickets. The two best teams of the zone, Delhi and Railways featured in the last of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1961-62 at Delhi from 06-07 January, 1962, where the Delhi team thrashed Railways by an innings and 53 runs to earn 9 points from it.
