Bombay team once again thrashed all the other teams in the tournament.

The Ranji Trophy, 1961-62 was one of the very successful editions of the tournament and there were a large number of 23 teams participated in the tournament. The teams came from all over India and they included the likes of Assam, Baroda, Bengal, Bihar, Bombay, Delhi, Gujarat, Hyderabad, Jammu & Kashmir, Kerala, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Madras, Mysore, Northern Punjab, Orissa, Railways, Rajasthan, Saurashtra, Southern Punjab, Services, Uttar Pradesh and the Vidarbha. The teams played in the tournament after being divided into five different zones by the BCCI.

Ranji Trophy - 1961-62 Central Zone League Matches: The Central Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1961-62 was comprised of a number of 4 teams including the Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Vidarbha. All the teams were coming from the Central region of India and they competed with each other for getting a birth in the knock out level of the tournament. However, only the teams of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh became successful to do so form the Central Zone.

Ranji Trophy - 1961-62 East Zone League Matches: The East Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1961-62 also saw the participation from a number of 4 teams, all from the Eastern region of India. The teams were the likes of Bengal, Bihar, Assam and Orissa and all the teams tried their best to enter into the knock out level of the tournament. The two top teams that became successful to do so from the East Zone were the Bengal and Bihar.

Ranji Trophy - 1961-62 North Zone League Matches: A number of 6 teams played their league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1961-62, under the North Zone. The teams included the likes of Northern Punjab, Delhi, Southern Punjab, Services, Jammu & Kashmir and the Railways. All the teams played well in the zonal level and the teams like Delhi and Railways became successful to enter into the knock out level of the tournament.

Ranji Trophy - 1961-62 South Zone League Matches: The South Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1961-62 saw the participation from a number of 4 teams, including the likes of Hyderabad, Mysore, Kerala and Madras. The Andhra team did not play in this edition of the tournament and the other four teams tried their best to get a chance to compete in the knock out level of the tournament. The teams of Madras and Mysore eventually became successful to do so from the South Zone.

Ranji Trophy - 1961-62 West Zone League Matches: The teams of Maharashtra, Bombay, Saurashtra, Baroda and Gujarat clashed with each other in the West Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1961-62. All the teams came from the Western part of India and after a very tough competition; the teams of Bombay and Baroda got the chance to play in the knock out level of the tournament from the zone.

Ranji Trophy - 1961-62 Knock out Matches: After completing their campaign in the zonal system, the top two teams from each and every Zone competed with each other in the knock out level of the Ranji Trophy, 1961-62. The teams like Madras, Delhi, Bombay, Bengal and Rajasthan were the teams that competed in the knock out matches in the tournament. However, it was once again the Bombay team that became the eventual champion of the championship.
