C. Kanniah, Tamil Theatre Personality
C. Kanniah was a pioneer of sets, stage decor, lights, and costumes in Tamil theatre.

C. Kanniah was the founder of Indu Vinoda Sabha. This was functioned from Tiruchchirappalli. Unrivalled in set designs and props for almost fifteen years beginning from 1915, he excelled in the art of lavish scenery and screens. This Tamil theatre personality`s lighting experiments were considered magical. His velvet screen with Krishna`s advice from the Gita decorated on it in silver zari embroidery was the talk of the day. In order to make the scenes effective he spent lakhs of rupees.

C. Kanniah brought painters and musicians from Bombay, and apparently gave stars like Kittappa real diamond ornaments to wear. His lead couple, the singing sensations Kittappa and Sundarambal, attracted thousands of people. Most of the plays done by his company were based on Vaishnava myths. This eminent Tamil Theatre Personality, C. Kanniah`s devotion added respect to his efforts. Kanniah had a penchant for publicity. It is said that on tour, posters for his shows could be found 500 km from the venues.
