B. Jayamma, Kannada Theatre Personality
B. Jayamma was a popular Kannada theatre and film actress.

B. Jayamma was a prominent star in Kannada theatre as well as films. She was born in the year 1915. From her childhood only she was very much keen to acting. B. Jayamma was married to Gubbi Veeranna. Her birthplace was Bangalore; B. Jayamma took up acting for a living at the age of 9, owing to the death of her father. She first played the silent Sita of myth in Sita kalyana i.e. `Sita`s Wedding` in 1924. This was produced by the Rasika Janananda Nataka Sabha. Then B. Jayamma joined Balu Basave Gowdas company and, later, the Gubbi Company in 1928. She devoted herself to that troupe, developing into their star actress and marrying Veeranna in 1931. Her lead roles in Bhakta Prahlada i.e. `Prahlada the Devotee`, Devadasi, and Sadarame earned her fame. She played Draupadi in their extravaganza, Kurukshetra in 1934. Both of them were very popular. She was also a singer trained in Hindustani and Carnatic classical music and an able Kathak dancer.

B. Jayamma was a popular heroine of silent movies like His Love Affair in 1931 and Hari Maya in 1932. She became celebrated for performances in films like Hemareddy Mallamma in 1945, as the devout protagonist. In Telugu, B. Jayamma acted the docile wife in Swargasima in 1945 while in Tamil cinema also she earned a lot of fame. After meeting Mahatma Gandhi in 1947, B. Jayamma made social work as her priority, though she continued acting in movies up to Mukti in 1970. In that film he acted in the role of a mother. B. Jayamma served as president of the Kannada Women Writers Association and, as a nominated member of the Karnataka State Legislative Council, looked into the welfare of retired professional stage actors as well. B. Jayamma is a legendary actress who expired in the year 1988.
