Roses, Indian Flower

RoseThe rose has always been valued for its beauty and has a long history of symbolism. Roses are ancient symbols of love and beauty. The rose was sacred to a number of goddesses (including Isis and Aphrodite), and is often used as a symbol of the Virgin Mary. Roses are so important that the word means pink or red in a variety of languages. Roses are bred by crossing old garden roses with more modern roses to achieve the superb fragrance, delicacy and charm of the old-style blooms combined with the repeat flowering characteristics and wide color range of modern roses.

Some English varieties are extra vigorous in warm areas as very large shrubs and some may want to become semi-climbers. Old Garden roses are the predecessors of today`s English Rosesroses. Some date back to the time of the Roman Empire when they were revered for their beauty and fragrance. Rose petals were used liberally by the wealthy at celebrations. Rose perfume was coveted by the very rich. Old garden roses have a delicate beauty and wonderful perfume not often found in modern hybrid tea roses. They are a diverse group from the stately Albas with wonderful fragrance and great winter hardiness to the tender and lovely tea roses best suited for warm climates.

Old Garden Roses comprise a multifaceted group that in general are easy to grow, disease-resistant and winter-hardy with most providing fragrance for the garden and homeThe rose is the national flower of England and the United States.According to the Victorian "language of flowers", different colored roses each have their own symbolic meaning:
Red: Love
Pink: Grace, gentle feelings of love
Dark Pink: Gratitude
Light Pink: Admiration, Sympathy
White: Innocence, Purity, Secrecy, Friendship, Reverence and Humility.
Yellow: Yellow roses generally mean dying love or platonic love. In German-speaking countries, however, they can mean jealousy and infidelity.
Yellow with Red Tips: Friendship, or falling in love
Orange: Passion
Burgundy: Beauty
Blue: Mystery
Green: Calm
Black: Slavish devotion (as a true black rose is impossible to produce)
Purple: Protection (paternal/maternal love)

Rose SyrupRose hips are sometimes eaten, mainly for their vitamin C content. They are usually pressed and filtered to make rose-hip syrup, as the fine hairs surrounding the seeds are unpleasant to eat (resembling itching powder). They can also be used to make herbal tea, jam, jelly and marmalade. Rose perfumes are also made from attar of roses or rose oil, which is a mixture of volatile essential oils obtained by steam-distilling the crushed petals of roses.

Roses are delicate and need much care in growing them for landscape gardening. Rose is generally exchanged to express love. Like most other plants, roses need exposure to sunlight. On average roses, need minimum exposure of four to six hours of sunlight. Complimenting the sunlight, roses also need to well water, most horticulturists recommend watering them every three days. Though, most modern roses are equipped for greater disease resistance, adaptation to multiple soil types and pruning, it is still very necessary that one takes greater care is protecting them from insects and perform regular pruning. The recommended rose bushes that ease out the pruning process are:

  • Hybrid tea rose bushes,

  • Polyanthas rose bushes and

  • Floribunda rose bushes.
