
CNN-IBN or Cable News Network-Indian Broadcasting Network is a 24 hour English news channel in India. CNN IBN was launched in India in 16th December, 2005. Headquartered at New Delhi, the news channel is supported by over 20 bureaus nationwide, along with a team of experienced newspersons and production staff, backed by TV18s state-of-the-art broadcast infrastructure and newsgathering technology.
CNN-IBN came into existence as a result of partnership between Turner International (Turner) in India and Global Broadcast News (GBN). One of the important people in the CNN-IBN is its Editor in chief, Rajdeep Sardesai. Most of the programmes aired at this news channel are similar to that of CNN in the United States, with current event talk programs mixed with news reports. It is also one of the first news channels in India to introduce the concept of "Citizen Journalist" where any person can send in his or her report to the channel which is aired in a separate section.
The flagship evening program at CNN-IBN, INDIA AT 9, daily aired on CNN Pipeline, is not simulcast (except during breaking news events). CNN-IBN has access to CNNs trademark live breaking news as well as their key feature programmes. This unique alliance, for the first time ever, enables Indian viewers to view local news as well as relevant global news from CNN, on the same platform. Besides live local news, the channels local editorial team decides packaging, commentary, analysis, etc. CNN-IBN can also use some of the CNN.com materials such as video footage to create their own stories for the CNN-IBN micro site.
Presently CNN-IBN broadcasts a host of programmes besides the regular news updates. The Weekend Edition, Living It Up, Face the Nation, The Week That Wasnt, Devils Advocate, Art of Investing, Minus 30, To Catch a Star, Out of the Box, Being Legends, All About the Money, Now Showing, Real Heroes, 30 Minutes and others. While The Weekend Edition is hosted by Rajdeep Sardesai himself, Being Legends sees Anuradha Sengupta interviewing living legends of India.
Devils Advocate is another show where the stalwarts from the Indian and international politics are questioned by Karan Thapar. It is interesting to watch Thapar bring up several issues that have never been talked about before in his inimitable style. On weekends its Cyrus Broacha whose puns are sure to brighten ones mood. A more serious Face the Nation is a primetime show that deals with the current events that have a huge impact on India. This show is conducted by the news anchor Sagarika Ghose. CNN-IBN offers its entertainment dose in the form of Now Showing and To Catch a Star. On Now Showing, Rajeev Masand presents the reviews of the latest flicks. Anubha Bhonsle, Shereen Bhan and Suhasini Haidar are the other news anchors for CNN-IBN.
The channel was in news itself in the early 2007, as it had announced an award for the `Indian of the Year` title, which had six nominees. From the six the jury selected Dr Manmohan Singh as the `CNN-IBN Indian of the Year`. CNN-IBN won the Panda award in the Best News story category for its story The last dance of Saras in the year 2006. In Indian Telelvision Awards, 2008, Rajdeep Sardesai once again bagged the best news anchor award whilst his show won the Best News award. State of the Environment Poll (Best Talk show) and The Week that Wasn`t (Best Comedy show) also brought home awards.
