Tripuraneni Ramaswamy Chaudari, Indian Theatre Personality
He was a Telugu poet and playwright whose works brought him into conflict with traditionalists.

Tripuraneni Ramaswamy Chaudari was born in the year 1886. He was a prominent figure in Telugu theatre. He was a man of rationalist outlook and outspoken frankness. He also strongly pleaded for prose drama instead of the then popular musicals in Telugu theatre. Tripuraneni Ramaswamy Chaudari was a barrister-at-law by profession, and was a great nationalist, too. Chaudari wrote three pioneering plays in which he questioned the conventional interpretations of Indian epics. In Knrukshetra sangramam i.e. Kurukshetra Conflict` in 1911, he championed Duryodhana`s cause. According to him, the Pandavas did not have any moral right to ask for a share in the kingdom. Likewise their victory was unethical. Sambuka vadha i.e. `Killing of Sambuka` in 1920 is based on an incident from the Ramayana in which Rama was said to have killed the sage Sambuka for religious reasons. Chaudari argues that Rama`s deed reflects the intrigue of the higher communities in eliminating the low-caste Sambuka for resorting to penance and other Vedic rituals.

The theme of Khuni i.e. `Murder` in 1935 is drawn from the Bhagavata Purana. Viswanatha Satyanarayana had already dramatized the story of Vena Raju, justifying his murder. Chaudari wrote Khuni as a riposte to prove that Vena was one of the earliest rationalists and, being a Dravidian, became a victim of the Aryan invasion. For Chaudari, Vena interrogated the veracity of the traditional attitude to the epics. Tripuraneni Ramaswamy Chaudari died in 1943.
