In this match Bengal and Bihar once again entered into the knock out level of the tournament.

The East Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1959-60 saw some exciting matches and tough competition between the four teams that were playing under the Zone. The teams that came from the Eastern India to play in the East Zone of the Ranji Trophy included the likes of Bengal, Assam, Orissa and Bihar and the Bengal and Bihar teams once again proved them to be better than the other teams in the zone.

The match between the teams of Orissa and Bengal was the first match of the East Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1959-60 and the match was played at Cuttack from 12-14 December, 1959. The match was won by the Bengal team with a huge margin of an innings and 22 runs and the teams also earned the entire 9 points from the match. In the second match of the East Zone, the teams of Orissa and Assam met with each other at Cuttack from 20-22 December, 1959. The match was drawn during its specified duration and the Orissa team earned 5 points and Assam got 3 points from the match.

The third match of the East Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1959-60 saw a clash between the teams of Bihar and Assam at Jamshedpur from 25-26 December, 1959. The match saw the Bihar team winning by a huge margin of an innings and 180 runs and the teams also earned the full 9 points from the match. The Bengal and Assam team then played against each other in the next match of the Zone at Calcutta from 31 December, 1959 - 02 January, 1960. The Bengal team played wonderfully in this match also and won the match by a huge margin of an innings and 228 runs.

The teams of Bihar and Orissa then played against each other at Cuttack in the fifth match of the East Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1959-60 and the match took place at Cuttack from 31 December, 1959 - 02 January, 1960. The drawn match saw the Orissa team earning 5 points and Bihar team earning 3 points from it. The two best teams of the East Zone, Bengal and Bihar clashed with each other in the last league match of the Zone at Jamshedpur from 09-11 January, 1960. The match witnessed a very tough contest between the two teams and the Bihar team eventually became successful to beat the Bengal team by a narrow margin of 2 wickets. The team also earned the entire 9 points from the match.
