In this match there was tough competition among the teams in this Zone.

The South Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1958-59 comprised a number of 5 teams, all from the Southern region of India. The teams included the likes of Kerala, Madras, Mysore, Andhra and Hyderabad and they played against each other for becoming one of the top two teams in the Zone and to enter into the knock out level of the tournament. The teams of Madras and Mysore teams played extremely well in the league matches of the South Zone and became successful to enter into the knock out level of the tournament from the Zone.

The league matches in the South Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1958-59 started with the match between the teams of Kerala and Madras at Trivandrum from 22-24 November 1958. The Madras team played wonderfully in the match and earned the full 9 points from it, by winning it with a margin of 170 runs. The next match of the Zone involved the teams of Kerala and Mysore and the match was held at Palghat from 28-30 November 1958. The Mysore team won the match by a margin of an innings and 43 runs and earned the entire 9 points from the match. The winner of the first two matches, the Madras and Mysore teams then clashed with each other for the third match of the South Zone at Coimbatore from 06-08 December, 1958. The match was drawn during its stipulated duration and the Madras and Mysore teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match.

The teams of Mysore and Hyderabad met with each other in the fourth league match of the South Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1958-59 at Mysore from 20-22 December, 1958. This match was also drawn and the match officials awarded the Mysore and Hyderabad teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. In the next match of the Zone, the teams of Madras and Andhra clashed with each other at Madras from 21-23 December, 1958. The Madras team won the match by a huge margin of an innings and 107 runs and earned the entire 9 points form the match. The Andhra team then played against the Hyderabad team at Guntur from 26-28 December, 1958, where it was defeated by the Hyderabad team by 63 runs. The Hyderabad team became successful to earn 8 valuable points from the match.

The next league match of the South Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1958-59 saw a clash between the teams of Andhra and Mysore at Guntur from 02-04 January, 1959. The drawn match saw the Mysore team earning 5 points and Andhra team earning 4 points from it. The Andhra team was a part of the next match also and this time, it played against the Kerala team at Venkatagiri from 08-10 January, 1959. This match was also a drawn one and the match officials awarded the Andhra and Kerala teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. Then, the Madras and Hyderabad teams clashed with each other at Madras from 10-12 January, 1959. The drawn match saw the Madras team earning 6 points and the Hyderabad team earning 3 points from it. The match between the teams of Kerala and Hyderabad at Ernakulam from 16-18 January, 1959, was the last match of the South Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1958-59. The winner of the match was the Hyderabad team with a margin of 169 runs and the win also earned them 8 valuable points.
