It was the starting point of Bombay`s incredible run of 15 straight title wins.

The number of participating teams in the tournament increased once again in the Ranji Trophy, 1958-59, when a number of 23 teams gave their consent to participate in the tournament. The teams were coming from all the parts of India in the tournament and the teams included the likes of Andhra, Assam, Baroda, Bengal, Bihar, Bombay, Delhi, Eastern Punjab, Gujarat, Hyderabad, Railways, Kerala, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Madras, Mysore, Orissa, Patiala, Rajasthan, Saurashtra, Services, Uttar Pradesh and the Vidarbha. The teams played under five different zones, according to the newly introduced rules of the tournament that was effective from the previous edition of the Ranji Trophy.

Ranji Trophy Central Zone League Matches: The teams from the Central India comprised the Central Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1958-59 and the teams in this zone were the likes of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Rajasthan. The first league match of the Central Zone in the tournament was held between the teams of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh at Kanpur from 29-31 December 1958. The Match was drawn during its stipulated duration and the match officials awarded 5 points to Uttar Pradesh and 3 points to Madhya Pradesh for the match.

Ranji Trophy East Zone League Matches: The East Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1958-59 saw the participations from a number of 4 teams like the Bengal, Assam, Bihar and Orissa. All the teams were from the Eastern India, according to the rules of the tournament and the Bengal and Bihar team played extremely in the group league matches. Both the teams were the heavyweights in their Zone and they eventually got into the knock out level from the East Zone.

Ranji Trophy North Zone League Matches: The North Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1958-59 was comprised of a number of 5 teams including the teams like Eastern Punjab, Services, Delhi, Patiala and Railways. Though the teams like Services and Railways were not from any particular state or region, they were included in the North Zone of the tournament. The teams like Delhi and Services played wonderfully in the league matches and they also reached the knock out level from the East Zone.

Ranji Trophy South Zone League Matches: The South Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1958-59 comprised a number of 5 teams, all from the Southern region of India. The teams included the likes of Kerala, Madras, Mysore, Andhra and Hyderabad and they played against each other for becoming one of the top two teams in the Zone and to enter into the knock out level of the tournament. The teams of Madras and Mysore teams played extremely well in the league matches of the South Zone and became successful to enter into the knock out level of the tournament from the Zone.

Ranji Trophy West Zone League Matches: There were a number of 5 teams included in the West Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1958-59 and all the teams were from the Western region of India. The teams that were listed under the West Zone included the likes of Gujarat, Baroda, Bombay, Maharashtra and Saurashtra. The teams like Bombay and Baroda played wonderfully in the league matches and became successful to enter into the knock out level of the tournament from the West Zone.

Ranji Trophy Knock out Matches: The knock out level of the Ranji Trophy, 1958-59 saw a number of ten teams competing against each other and trying to win the trophy. The most important teams of the level included the likes of Madras, Bombay, Services, Rajasthan and Bengal.
