Once the first edition of the Ranji Trophy became a great success, the interests of the Indian cricket enthusiasts started to increase about the tournament and the second edition of the tournament was held in 1935-36. The Ranji Trophy, 1935-36 saw the participation of 16 teams and the teams included the likes of Bengal, Bombay, Central India, CP & Berar, Delhi, Gujarat, Hyderabad, Madras, Maharashtra, Mysore, Northern India, Rajputana, Sind, Southern Punjab, United Province and the Western India. The first match of this edition was played between Madras and Mysore at Bangalore from 30 November-2 December, 1935 and the Madras team won the match by 109 runs.
In the second match of the Ranji Trophy, 1935-36, the teams like Maharashtra and the champion of the previous edition, Bombay met with each other. The match was held at Poona Club Ground from 10-12 December, 1935 and the Bombay team was declared the winner, as it had a lead in the first innings of the drawn match. The third match saw a battle between the teams of Western India and Gujarat at Poona Club Ground from 13-15 December and the match was won by the Western India team by a huge margin of 254 runs. The teams of Bombay and Sind clashed with each other in the fourth match of the tournament and the match was held at the Poona Club Ground from 16-18 December, 1935. This match was also drawn and the Bombay team declared the winner for having a lead in the first innings. The fifth match at Indore was participated by the teams of Central India and Rajputana and the match was held from 19-21 December, 1935. The Central India team played well in the match and eventually won it by 242 runs.
The teams like Bombay and Western India clashed with each other in the sixth match of the Ranji Trophy, 1935-36 and the match was held from 20-22 December, 1935 at the Poona Club Ground. Bombay once again became the winner of another drawn match, thanks to their first innings lead. In the seventh match of the tournament, held at Chennai from 28-30 December, 1935, the Madras and Hyderabad cricket teams clashed with each other. The match was won by the Madras team by a broad margin of 6 wickets. The Bengal and the Central Provinces and Berar team played in the eighth match of the tournament in Calcutta from 10-12 January, 1936. The Bengal team became successful to win the match by 5 wickets.
The Bengal team appeared in the ninth match of the tournament as well and this time, the team played against the Central India team at Calcutta, from 18-20 January, 1936. The team got the win in the drawn match, as it was leading its opponents in the first innings. The tenth match of the Ranji Trophy, 1935-36 saw a battle between the teams of Southern Punjab and the United Provinces at Delhi from 12-14 February, 1936. The winner of the drawn match was the United Provinces team, as it got a lead in the first innings. The first Semi-Final of the tournament was held between the teams of Madras and Bengal at Chennai from 14-16 February, 1936 and the Madras team became successful to win the match by 91 runs.
In 11th match of the group level of Ranji Trophy, 1935-36, the teams like Delhi and Northern India met with each other at Delhi from 15-17 February, 1936. The Northern India team was declared the winner of the drawn match for having a lead in the first innings. Then came the 12th and last match of the group level of the tournament, where the Northern India and United Provinces team clashed at Delhi from 19-21 February, 1936. Northern India won the match by a huge margin of an innings and 31 runs and went into the Semi-Final to meet with the Bombay team.
In the second Semi-Final of the Ranji Trophy, 1935-36, the Bombay and Northern India team played against each other at Delhi from 20-23 March, 1936. The hardly fought match saw the Bombay team winning the match by a mere 12 runs and it helped the team to reach the Final. The Final match of the tournament was held from 27-31 March, 1936 at Delhi between the teams of Bombay and Madras. The winner of the previous edition of Ranji Trophy, Bombay team played another extraordinary match in the final and became successful to win the trophy in Ranji Trophy, 1935-36. The Bombay team won the Final match against Madras by a huge margin of 190 runs.
