In the Puranas Mekala is said to be a Rishi or a sage.

Mekala is the name of a Rishi or a sage, as mentioned in the Puranas. Mekala was the father of the river Narmada. Mekala and Mekalakanya is the mountain from which rises river Narmada and is known as Mekaladri.
