Meher Rustom Contractor, Indian Puppeteer
Meher Rustom Contractor was pioneering modern puppeteer.

Meher Rustom Contractor was born in the year of 1918. After training in art at London and specializing in portrait painting, book illustrations, and fashion design, she turned to puppetry in 1952. She was actively associated with the Darpana Academy in Ahmadabad. Since 1957, she set up the Darpana Puppet Troupe in 1968. She also served as Vice-President of UNIMA i.e. Union Internationale de la Marionnette for three terms, beginning in 1964, 1976, and 1980 respectively. Her productions especially in shadow theatre, namely the Ramayana, Savitri and Satyavan, and Rustom and Sohrab received worldwide acclaim. She also taught and wrote books on Indian puppets. Meher Rustom Contractor died on 1992.
