Malayalam cinema refers to the films made in the Malayalam language In the Indian state of Kerala. Malayalam films with its strong footage forms a significant position in Indian cinema. The initial steps were indeed unsure as once upon a time the very word Malayalam Cinema only referred to the remakes of Tamil and Telugu movies. Mohanlal Viswanathan Nair is one of the most popular actors of Malayalam films. He is one of those rare actors who had received in National Award twice and being acknowledged as the best actor award in six times in Kerala. He is mostly popular for his films in latter part of 1980s and 1990s.

Another actor who took the Malayalam film industry by storm is Mammotty. With a career spinning over a quarter of a decade Mammotty has in around 300 films. According to critics he is one of the finest actors in the Malayalam film industry who is comfortable with both commercial and parallel films.

It was the copious contribution of the Malayalam actors like Mohanlal, Mammotty and Suresh Gopi, which made Malayalam cinema industry lot more artistic yet realistic. The seed of contemporaneousness in the Malayalam film industry was first sown during their time. A curious co existence of commercial and art films in Malayalam cinema industry was perceived which invariably introduced a new concept of "Star Value" in the industry.,

Some of the popular stars today in Malayalam film industry are Siddharth, Prithviraj, Rahman and others. Kottarakkara, Madhu, Nassar, Prem Nazir, Premji, Raghuvaran, Sathyan, Sukumaran .

Apart from the leading men, the Malayalam film industry has also seen the rise of some of the marvelous female actors. The actresses in this industry are talented and multi faceted. They are well trained in Indian classical dances and are an equal match to their leading men. Actresses like Bhanupriya have worked with Kamal Hassan, Rajnikanth and others. Apart from her there are a host of gifted actresses, such as, Ambika, Bhavana, Devayani, Gouthami, Kalpana, Parvathy, Revathi, Shobhana, Soundarya and Urvashi are some of the famous Malayalam actresses.

Meera Jasmine stepped into the Malayalam film industry with Soothradharan in 2001. Today she is one of the prominent actresses. She has won awards like National Film Award, Filmfare awards, Kerala state film awards for her roles.
