Mabalipuram, also known as Mahabalipuram or Mamallapuram is a sacred place about 34 miles north of Madras. In the 7th century, during the Pallavas dynasty Mabalipuram was a port city.
Mabalipuram is nicknamed as land of "Seven Pagodas" after British traveler John Goldingham explored the city in the year 1798.
Some of the important sculptures of Mahabalipuram are Thirukadalmallai, temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu; Descent of the Ganges, a giant open-air relief; Arjuna`s Penace; Varaha Cave Temple; the Shore temple and the Pancha Rathas.
