
Bhakti Barve-lnamdar was an outstanding Marathi actress associated with leading groups like Theatre Unit, Indian National Theatre, and Rangayan. She was born in Sangli, from her school days she was interested in drama and participated in Sudha Karmarkar`s productions of children`s theatre. She worked as an announcer at All India Radio, Bombay. After then she went on to join Doordarshan as a newsreader and producer. Her notable roles included the heroines of Ajab nyaya vartulacha i.e. `Strange Justice of the Circle` in 1973, C. T. Khanolkar`s adaptation of Brecht`s Caucasian Chalk Circle, Mohan Rakesh`s Adhe-adhure, and P. L. Deshpande`s 77 phularani i.e. `Flower Queen` in 1975, based on Shaw`s Pygmalion and Alan Jay Lerner`s My Fair Lady. She had over 2500 performances in Marathi, Hindi, and Gujarati to her credit, and traveled to Germany, the USSR, and the Gulf countries on acting assignments. She also played a tabloid editor in the unusual slapstick film Jane bhi do yaro or `Who Pays the Piper` in 1983, and other parts in movies and television drama as well. She was married to actor late Shafi Inamdar.
Her sterling performance opposite the late Satish Dubhashi in Ti Phulrani, of a village flower-seller being groomed into a high society girl, had won accolades from critics as well as the audience. She was also known for her contribution to Gujarati theatre.
At the age of 52, in 2001 this Marathi actress Bhakti Barve Inamdar was killed when her car dashed against an electric pole near Alibag. Bhakti received several awards, including the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar, Sangeet Natak Akademi award and Abhinay Puraskar.
