The Vedas and Puranas both are the ancient texts revealing the very essence of Indian Culture and civilization. There are differing opinions among scholars regarding the comparative value of the historical data supplied by the Vedas and the Puranas. However the chronological sequence the Vedas followed and due to the priority of age, the Vedas are much more enriched than the Puranas, according to the scholars. But the later researches reveal that, the Puranas, however, cannot be ignored absolutely. Though Puranas depicts a number of untrustworthy details, yet it is considered as important extant texts giving the historical details. Since fiction can never be composed without factual details, the scholars also considered that Puranas depicts the factual details about the Indian and civilization.
While making a comparative study of the Vedic texts and the Puranas, the scholars have approached several opinions. According to them, the Vedas and the Puranas were produced under different circumstances and with different aims and objects. Hence there would naturally be some differences in the accounts recorded in them. Though apparently several differences are noticed in the Vedas and the Puranas, yet on the basic level the Vedas and the Puranas are not entirely different from each other.
The Rig Veda is a Kuru-Panchala product and naturally kings belonging to that country play prominent roles and become the main subject of the Rig Veda. As a result the other kings find only incidental mention. Kings mentioned in the Vedas but not in the Puranas possibly belonged to smaller dynasties, whose names were therefore not preserved in the latter.
There is also the possibility of the same person being referred to under different names in the two sets of traditional accounts. Some of the kings mentioned in the Rig Veda can also be found in the Puranic lists.
The Rig Veda no doubt offers proper counteractive to the Puranic lists. Sometimes the Puranic literatures also corroborated the Vedic texts. Hence there is no conflict and contradictions of the Vedic texts with the Puranic literatures. Sometimes details are also available in the Puranic texts about which the Vedic literary texts are completely silent.
The proper procedure for the writing of traditional history is to take into account the joint testimony of the Vedic and the Puranic texts wherever available and to try to bring harmony into the conflicting texts. The evidence of the Puranas in these matters needs very careful consideration.
