In the science of palmistry, hand covers a significant position. It has been said in the "Hasta Sanjivani" that there is nothing in the three worlds for knowledge besides the hand, which can be read like a book. In India, palmistry has been a subject of great interest for ages immemorial. Palmistry is considered as an important way to predict the future. Palmistry is mainly concerned about the intricate lines drawn over the palms. God, the supreme artist to determine the future has depicted the future incidents or happenings by means of zigzag lines on a human hand.

Palmistry however has migrated from India to other countries like Greece, Egypt, Persia and Syria in ancient times. Sages like Narada, Valmiki, Garga, Bhrigu, Prahlada and astrologers like Varahamihir have done a lot of work in Palmistry. The books like, Hasta Sanjivani and Bhavishya Puranam had discussed in details the significance of hands in the science of Palmistry.

There are different kinds of hands. The structure of the hands determines several significant aspects of human character. The wrist acts as the link in joining the hand to the arm. The forepart of the wrist is called `palm` .The lines and characters, which Nature has imprinted on hand, are very important for a palmist. Those lines and characters on hand appeared as the Divine Judgment as is said by Aristotle. The lines imprinted on hand determined the Conditions, Inclinations, and Fortunes of Individuals. Palmistry had been a subject of concern even before the advent of Christ. Today Palmistry has completely transformed into a science, because of the extensive research done by the intelligentsia. Palmistry is a science of perception of the Past, Present and Future of a person by the lines drawn on the hand.

However the hand of every individual is unique. It is the hand, which reflects the nature of the person. There are five kinds of hands - very small hand, small hand, ordinary hand, long hand, and very long hand, according to the science of Palmistry . The pads or mounts of the hand determine the strengths and weaknesses in the personality. The marks and lines in the hand illustrate a vivid picture of events that take place in his life. However these marks and lines may change from time to time depending on the planetary energies, which vary from time to time. A careful observation of the lines and the mounts portray in the hand represented all these factors, to understand what the person is and what his future will be.

Though palmistry derived its origin in India yet nowadays, it has lost its former significance in India. Somehow palmistry could not receive proper attention in India in modern times. It has been attaining a wide popularity in the Western Countries.
