Mudabidri is one of the sacred centres of Karnataka. It is situated at 35 km northeast of Mangalore city. There are 18 bastis in Mudabidri. The `Chandranatha Basti` is the oldest among them. It was built in the 15th century and has a 1000-pillared hall.
The Mudabidri temple is situated to the north of the town centre. It is very impressive and attractive. It is surrounded by the walls and the entrance is on the eastern side. There is a huge stone lamp tower just inside the gate. There are steps to go to the large open sided mandapam i, e, the pavilion at the front of a temple. The steps are edged by a pair of stone elephants on both sides. The total length of the temple up to the glittering deity in the sanctuary can be seen from the hall. The hall has huge pillars, which are mostly plainly styled and sustain a roof made of huge stone slabs. The stone roof of the temple, which is surmounted by a gabled and tiled wooden roof, gives a little strange appearance to the onlookers.
