The vast stretches of desert have made the Ship of the Desert, camel, an indispensable part of Bikaner. This district is well connected with the rest of the world as it has developed as a major tourist attraction in Rajasthan. Found in 1486 AD by Rao Bikaji this present district is famous worldwide for its golden sand dunes and red sandstone monuments. To arrive at this district if the travelers are availing flights then they need to drop in at the Jodhpur airport.

The nearest airport in Bikaner is at Jodhpur. It is located at a distance of 256 kilometers. From here transportations are available to reach Bikaner. Railway lines also connect the district with cities like Delhi, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Agra, Mumbai, and Kolkata. By road too the district is accessible. Regular bus services can be availed from Jodhpur, Jaipur, Ajmer (via Nokha and Nagaur), Jaisalmer (via Phalodi and Pokaran) and Delhi (via Ratangarh and Hissar in Haryana). As far as the local transportations are concerned there are taxis and auto-rickshaws. The best season time to visit Bikaner is from October to March.

Bikaner is dotted with several ancient monuments. The primary local attraction is the Junagarh Fort. Within the citadel the tourists will come across numerous other places of interest. Bikaner`s forts, palaces, public buildings, magnificent creations in red and yellow sandstone, are living manifestations of its rich historical and architectural legacy. The old city is circumscribed by a 7 kilometers long embattled wall having five entrance gates. The fort and the palaces are outside the city walls.
