Mehrangarh Fort: This is the oldest monument is Jodhpur. `Mehrangarh` means the Majestic Fort. Being one of the largest forts in India the name is apt for it. The construction of the fort was started by Rao Jodha in 1459 but most it was completed during the reign of Jaswant Singh. There are several buildings within the fort that add to the grandeur and magnificence of the fort. The buildings within the fort are:-
Umaid Vilas: It has an exclusive collection of paintings belonging to the Jodhpur School of art. A painting of Maharaja Pratap Singh made by Amar Das is worth checking out. The paintings here are mainly portraits of the royal people. Some of them also depict their lifestyle. Hence the tourists will also find paintings where the royal personages are seen playing Holi.
Phool Mahal: Also known as the Flower Palace it was constructed by Abhay Singh. This section too is famous for its wall of paintings. They have slightly an European tinge. The Phool Mahal was used as a Private Audience Hall and portraits of several classical ragas) of Indian music are found on its walls.
Jhanki Mahal: It is the place from where the royal ladies watched the official proceedings in the court of the kings. Located in the courtyard of the fort today it has been converted into a museum. It has a wide collection of royal cradles.
Moti Mahal: This is one of the palaces within the Mehrangarh Fort. The main attraction is here are the latticed windows (jail windows). The work is so fine that from a distance it seems that they are made of lace.
Chamunda Devi Temple: The temple dedicated to Goddess Chamunda or Durga. The idol was brought by Rao Jodha but it was destroyed in an explosion. The idol was reconstructed by Takhat Singh.
Jaswant Thada: The royal cenotaphs are located here. The royal crematorium of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II is also located here. Built in all white marble it is situated in close proximity to Mehrangarh. This monument was built in 1899. Portraits of various rulers of Jodhpur are also placed here. The travelers will also come across impressive latticework in marble in Jaswant Thada.
Umaid Bhawan Palace: It was built by Maharaja Umaid Singh in 1929. It is a living example of Indo-Colonial art deco style of the 30s. The palace owns more than 300 rooms. Today, however, the hotel has been converted into a hotel, museum and a royal residence. Even today it stands as the most exquisite structure in Jodhpur.
Museums in Jodhpur: There are several museums in Jodhpur but most of these are located within the fort or palace premises. These museums house various articles belonging to the by gone era. From pottery to arm and ammunitions to apparel-all kinds of artifacts are present here. The museums are well maintained and are instrumental in providing a hint about the royal family and its lifestyle.
Maha Mandir: This temple is located on the Mandore Road, 2 kilometers northeast of the city of Jodhpur. It was constructed in 1812. Besides being a place of worship it is also an architectural delight. The structure of the temple has been supported by 84 pillars. These in turn are intricately designed.
