Jaswant Thada, Jodhpur , Rajasthan

Jaswant Thada, Jodhpur , RajasthanJaswant Thada is located in the left side of the Mehrangarh Fort. It is a royal cenotaph that was built in the memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. It was built in the 19th century by the king`s son, Maharaja Sardar Singh. Apart from this main chhatri there are other two tombs located within it. Chhatris were generally built for the Rajput kings and heroes. They mark the bravery of the dead people. As a sign of respect these were built. There are three other cenotaphs located near Jaswant Thada. This place also served as a royal crematorium.

Besides the historical significance it is a fine instance of architectural brilliance. The entire cenotaph is built in pristine white marble. The main attraction here is the `jali` windows. These were made out of marble. The fine art work will look like lace work from a distance. Such intricate work is worth checking out.

The cenotaph of Maharaja Jaswant Singh displays the portraits of the ruler and other rulers of Jodhpur. This chhatri has is placed in the center of the monument. It has been built in the shape of a temple.

Jaswant Thada is constructed in the middle of hills, away from the settlement so that the souls of the dead may rest in peace.
