M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women was established with the objective of nurturing female students in the fields of higher education and learning. Dewan Bahadur M.O. Parthasarthy Aiyengar, a famous barrister, thinker and humanitarian had launched the M.O.P. Charities, had contributed land worth Rs.70 crores in the heart of Chennai to institute the college. Sri Vallabhacharya Vidya Sabha, the prominent managing body of D.G. Vaishnav College, in collaboration with Dewan Bahadur, M.O. Parthasarthy Aiyengar Charities, had established the women`s college in 1992. Since its inception, the college has recorded a phenomenal continual growth.

M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women, N. H Road, Chennai, Tamil NaduAffiliated to University of Madras, it offers selective job-oriented professional courses and postgraduate courses with support from efficient and qualified faculty members. During 1992 it had begun with just 3 courses - B.Com., B.B.A., B.Sc. (Maths). Presently the College offers thirteen undergraduate courses and five postgraduate courses. The School of Communication and Media Studies of M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women offers courses in undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These include-- M.A. in Broadcast Communication, M.A. in Communication, M.A. in Public Relations, B.Sc in Visual Communication, B.Sc. in Electronic Media, B.A. in Journalism. The School of Information Technology offers-- M.Sc in I.T, B.Sc in Computer Science, B.C.A, B.Sc in Mathematics with Computer specialisation. The School of Business under M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women also offers Masters in Business Administration (M.B.A), Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.), B.Sc in Information Systems Management, B.Com in (Accounting and Finance), B.Com in Marketing Management, B.Com in Corporate Secretaryship. School of Food Science admits students for B.Sc in Nutrition, Food Service Management and Dietetics. School of social science offers B.A. in Sociology. `Add-on` career programmes sponsored by University Grants Commission (UGC) are offered as Certificate Courses. These comprise-- Audio & Video Production, MultiMedia and Clinical Nutrition.

Today the college has student strength of 2823, thus enabling qualitative and quantitative growth. M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women had offered itself for official approval in its decennial year and had become the first self-financing college to be accredited in the University area. NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) had awarded the institution with four stars. The college also is one of the youngest colleges in India that has been granted autonomy status by University Grants Commission (UGC) and also by Madras University. The M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women Library consists of 3 floors that are well stocked with reading materials. The Library has a total collection of 21,800 books providing accessibility to over one hundred journals. The Library user Collection can accommodate nearly eight hundred students per day. Hence the library is wholly automated for meeting the academic needs with computerised cataloguing, automatic circulation system, with facilities of scan and photocopy. There is an Internet browsing centre, with round-the-clock Internet connectivity.
