Kye Monastery is a prehistoric establishment, situated 14km north of Kaza in Lahul and Spiti district in Himachal Pradesh. Placed at an elevation of 4166m above the surface level, it is the oldest and largest monastery in the Spiti Valley, also called Ki Monastery. Kye Monastery houses gorgeous scriptures and exceptional paintings of Buddha and other Hindu deities. Murals and books of high artistic value, including the Tangyur texts are maintained here. It is a storehouse of priceless Thangka paintings and several olden musical instruments, like trumpets, cymbals and drums. Kye Monastery acts as a training centre for Lamas. Kye monastery that grew during the 14th century in the aftermath Chinese influence, is a stupendous example of the monastic architectural style of gothic times. It was pillaged by the Mongols in the middle of 17th century. These recurring chains of destruction and patch-up jobs had malformed the awe-inspiring construction; it now looks more like a fortification. Kye Monastery can be approached from Kaza by bus.
